LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

‘CUT IT OFF…’

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Matthew 5:27‭-‬30 NIV

Lust preys on our hearts and matures into full-blown sin over time. This is the message Christ delivers to us through these verses. In those days, adultery was of course frowned upon. But nothing prepared the scribes around Christ for what was coming. Christ literally overturned their understanding of adultery. He pointed them to a God who not only sees the acts of men but also their hearts. He sees what we conceive and harbor within ourselves long before the act sets in. Sin is an issue of the heart. The eyes are just an entry point. So what should we do in this case? Well, He gives us a straightforward answer…severe the parts that lead you to sin. If it’s your hand, cut it off… If it’s your eyes, gouge them off. Disconnect yourselves from what is likely to entangle you in sin. Put in other words, those situations that bring life to lustful thoughts need to be cut off. So what triggers me towards lustful thoughts? I have a duty to severe these things from myself. It’s not going to be easy but it’s worth the while if I intend to live in obedience to Christ.
