35 “If anyone’s bull injures someone else’s bull and it dies, the two parties are to sell the live one and divide both the money and the dead animal equally. 36 However, if it was known that the bull had the habit of goring, yet the owner did not keep it penned up, the owner must pay, animal for animal, and take the dead animal in exchange.

Equity in dispute resolution is highlighted here. If a bull kills another without the owner’s knowledge of it’s habit, then the living bull would be sold and the money divided between the two. However if the owner knew about the bull’s waywardness but still didn’t stop it from killing other animals, then he forfeits ownership as compensation. Again this scripture reminds us of responsibility. But it also teaches us about the cost of irresponsibility. There are times we hear of stories of parents who know their child’s waywardness yet allows him to injure other children without taking responsibility. God’s word is reminding us again that we are responsible for what we know. If we don’t do what’s needed to avoid endangering others yet we have background info, God will hold us responsible.
