1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there. 2 The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority. 5 So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field. Joseph was an ordinary young man. A son of Jacob. Yet scripture depicts him in an extraordinary way. The life of Joseph is a true definition of success. True success can only be found in one who walks with God hand in hand. Verse 2 says that the Lord was with Joseph and he was a successful man. Verse 3 says that his master (the slave owner who’s credentials we know) saw that the Lord was with him and that he prospered in all he did with his hands. Upon noticing this he made him the overseer of his house as stated in verse 4. Once this happened the Lord blessed his house on account of Joseph, the slave. This scripture drives me to think about the true definition of success. This passage completely demolishes the notion that success is exclusively based on material blessing. Infact it alludes to true success not being material based after all. True success is walking in God’s will. Joseph, a slave in his teenage was a man who had nothing but just faith in God. Having been sold to a very powerful and prominent man, all indications would be that the odds were stacked against him. After all, what would he have done in service to his master to draw his attention. Yet scripture reminds us that God was with him. God also blessed the works of his hands. Not only that, God also blessed his master on account of him. It doesn’t matter the kind of work we do. God can use any vocation or trade to glorify Himself. The work Joseph did in the house of potiphar is not mentioned. But irrespective of the slave duties he performed he drew God’s blessings because he walked with Him. Not only did God bless him but blessed the household of his master. Our commitment to God even in our work can cause Him to bless even the people we’re working for. Even a boss with no regard for God can end up blessed by God on account of a worker who reveres God. True success results from a closer walk with God irrespective of our material or financial realities.
