10 “Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its produce, 11 but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave, the beasts of the field may eat. In like manner you shall do with your vineyard and your olive grove. 12 Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female servant and the stranger may be refreshed. 13 “And in all that I have said to you, be circumspect and make no mention of the name of other gods, nor let it be heard from your mouth.

The Sabbath is a command from God much in the same way He issued other commandments among the ten. But the striking thing with this reminder about rest is the reason behind it. God intended the land to lay fallow in the seventh year to allow the poor and the destitute to eat from it. They were to collect the remains of the harvest for storage and what remained was to be left for the beasts of the field. The same was to happen for the oxen, the donkey and the servants. Rest would unite us all. It would bring relief to all. The same way Christ brought redemption to all. In many ways rest reversed the order: land meant to produce remained fallow; poor people who struggled to get food would gather and store; beasts of burden which toiled in the field would retire and retreat; servants who were ever busy would have time to take a nap and rest. All of us are meant to slow down from the fast paced life and reflect on God’s goodness during this time. Christ died on the cross to give us rest from sin. Sin burdens us. We pay a heavy price while carrying it around. But Christ carried it on the cross and gave us rest from it. Now we can walk free honoring Him.
