LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

7 “Make curtains of goat hair for the tent over the tabernacle—eleven altogether. 8 All eleven curtains are to be the same size—thirty cubits long and four cubits wide. 9 Join five of the curtains together into one set and the other six into another set. Fold the sixth curtain double at the front of the tent. 10 Make fifty loops along the edge of the end curtain in one set and also along the edge of the end curtain in the other set. 11 Then make fifty bronze clasps and put them in the loops to fasten the tent together as a unit. 12 As for the additional length of the tent curtains, the half curtain that is left over is to hang down at the rear of the tabernacle. 13 The tent curtains will be a cubit longer on both sides; what is left will hang over the sides of the tabernacle so as to cover it. 14 Make for the tent a covering of ram skins dyed red, and over that a covering of the other durable leather.
Exodus 26:7‭-‬14 NIV

This was an elaborate description of the second covering of the tabernacle. It consisted of goat’s hair and interwoven fabric with a length of 15 metres. As seen previously, God’s instructions about the tabernacle were being given from the inside – out. Here, goat’s hair would function as a good covering preventing those proceeding from outside from seeing the inside of the tent or the holy of holies. Nothing was wasted including the remaining goat’s hair which was used as an extension on other parts of the tabernacle. As opposed to gold which was used in the inner separations, bronze was the material of choice here. The inner parts of the tabernacle were given more honor which receded as we moved outwards. Isn’t it the same case when looking at our lives? Our hearts matter before God compared to our outer man. What stands out in this description of the tabernacle is the detail in it. God instructed His people and they took it for word. They acted upon it to the detail. I can only imagine if it was during our time. Probably a 3D projection of the structure of the tabernacle would have helped us and made work easier. It would still had been possible for God to make things easier for them but instead, He tasked them the laborious way. At times the tasks we dismiss as repetitive and mundane are the same ones that draw us near to God. I can imagine the Israelite craftsmen and fabric specialists working day by day on the structure of the tabernacle. I’m sure these tasks drew them closer to God day by day. Those tasks we deem boring in our workplace could still be used of God to produce a masterpiece. Infact, all we need to do is ask Him how we can do this work to His glory and He’ll give us specifications.
