1 “Build an altar of acacia wood, three cubits high; it is to be square, five cubits long and five cubits wide. 2 Make a horn at each of the four corners, so that the horns and the altar are of one piece, and overlay the altar with bronze.

The altar or killing place was to take a structure of a square which was overlayed with bronze to withstand the excess desert heat. This would be a place where animals would be sacrificed to the Lord. Where the sins of the people would be atoned for. Christ our Savior would be taken to the altar of the cross where He would be sacrificed for our sins just in the same way a bull or a ram would be sacrificed by the high priest. The altar represented the cross of Christ. A wooden structure overlayed with bronze representing a rugged cross that would carry Christ the One Who would stand on our behalf and take our punishment. The four horns were to ‘hold’ the animal in place during sacrifice. At the start of the book of 1 Kings, we see one of David’s sons, Adonijah running to hold the horns of the altar after unsuccessfully trying to overthrow his brother King Solomon. He must have thought that he’ll gain mercy and he did.
