3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn; My might, the beginning of my strength and vigor, Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power [that should have been your birthright]. 4 But unstable and reckless and boiling over like water [in sinful lust], you shall not excel or have the preeminence [of the firstborn], Because you went up to your father’s bed [with Bilhah]; You defiled it—he went up to my couch.

Though Reuben was Jacob’s first born, he missed out in the first born blessings. He engaged in the sin of incest with his father’s wife, Bilhah. Reuben symbolizes many of us today: People who’ve disrespected parents to the extent that we’ve even left a bitter taste in their mouths. The words of Jacob came true for Reuben. He missed out on the great inheritance. But what does this scripture tell us about the repercussions of sinful lust? What does it remind us about sin? Sin brings pain and suffering not only to us but to future generations. The Reubenites, though descended from the first born of Jacob did not hold any position of prominence in Israel. The sin of their father had generational implications.
