LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers [equally headstrong, deceitful, vindictive, and cruel]; Their swords are weapons of violence and revenge. 6 O my soul, do not come into their secret council; Let not my glory (honor) be united with their assembly [for I knew nothing of their plot]; Because in their anger they killed men [an honored man, Shechem, and the Shechemites], And in their self-will they lamed oxen. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; And their wrath, for it was cruel. I will divide and disperse them in Jacob, And scatter them in [the midst of the land of] Israel.
Genesis 49:5‭-‬7 AMP

Simeon and Levi were responsible for the massacre at Shechem. They conspired to kill the people there because Shechem, their prince had raped their sister Dinah. Though the act committed on Dinah deserved condemnation, they acted out of conspiracy and a desire to revenge. So Jacob distanced himself from their sin and proclaimed that they would be scattered in Israel. During the allotment of land, Simeon was scattered among other tribes. Their heritage was little. But even though Levi too was scattered God shows His mercy by appointing them as priests of His people. This communicates a message of God’s grace among His people. He’s a God who can take the bad we’ve done and use it to His own glory. Blessed be His holy name.
