LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

22 “Joseph is a fruitful bough (a main branch of the vine), A fruitful bough by a spring (a well, a fountain); Its branches run over the wall [influencing others]. 23 The [skilled] archers have bitterly attacked and provoked him; They have shot [at him] and harassed him. 24 But his bow remained firm and steady [in the Strength that does not fail], For his arms were made strong and agile By the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, (By the name of the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel), 25 By the God of your father who will help you, And by the Almighty who blesses you With blessings of the heavens above, Blessings lying in the deep that couches beneath, Blessings of the [nursing] breasts and of the [fertile] womb. 26 The blessings of your father Are greater than the blessings of my ancestors [Abraham and Isaac] Up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills; They shall be on the head of Joseph, Even on the crown of the head of him who was the distinguished one and the one who is prince among (separate from) his brothers.

The blessings on Joseph were unique. Jacob spoke figuratively of the way Joseph had overcome the persecution of his brothers for him to be established by God. In verse 25, he even talks of blessings of fertility. He mentions the word ‘breasts’ which symbolised many descendants. Indeed this was the case for Joseph. His second born son, Ephraim was one of the strongest and powerful tribes militarily in Israel rivaled by only the Benjamites and Judah. But also, the land allotment for the tribe of Manasseh, Joseph’s older son, would be greater than many of the other tribes. The blessings upon Joseph would indeed be great. Joseph’s life reminds me of how God turns tables beyond our expectation especially when we’re thinking that all is lost. Joseph’s life speaks to those of us who’ve been wounded by those close to us. God still has a plan for our lives. If we’re faithful, He’ll accomplish it. Joseph’s life speaks to those of us with a deposited dream…a dream that’s so great that it scares us stiff. God will answer our prayers.
