Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

28 All these are the [beginnings of the] twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them as he blessed them, blessing each one according to the blessing appropriate to him. 29 He charged them and said to them, “I am to be gathered to my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 in the cave in the field at Machpelah, east of Mamre, in the land of Canaan, that Abraham bought, along with the field from Ephron the Hittite, to possess as a burial site. 31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife, there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I buried Leah— 32 the field and the cave that is in it was purchased from the sons of Heth.” 33 When Jacob (Israel) had finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people [who had preceded him in death].

Jacob rested with his ancestors after blessing his sons. But something worth noting is that he chose to be buried in the same land where his father and grandfather had been buried. Though living in Egypt, he sought to be taken back to the promised land as a symbol to his people that this was God’s heritage to them. He was also buried together with his wife Leah. He had not loved Leah at the beginning. However, over time it must have dawned on him how important this lady was in the heritage of his lineage. Leah bore Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah. The Levitea became the priests while Judah was the largest and most predominant tribe in Israel. It was also the tribe that bore David, the greatest king in Israel and Jesus Christ the King of kings. The story of Leah is one that reminds us how God can pick the not-so-impressive and convert it into a masterpiece. It reminds us about the importance of commitment to the one you’re married to. If Jacob had reacted emotionally and left Leah, this lineage would have been lost. But he stayed committed through it all and was even buried next to her.
