LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

34 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices—gum resin, onycha and galbanum—and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, 35 and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. 36 Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. 37 Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the Lord. 38 Whoever makes incense like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from their people.”
Exodus 30:34‭-‬38 NIV

Incense in the tabernacle symbolized a life of prayer as highlighted in Revelation. This incense, made of a unique blend of spices was to be burnt on the altar of incense just outside the holy of holies, a preserve of the priests. A few aspects about its ingredients stand out: fankinsence which was part of the gifts the Maggi brought to baby Jesus, salt which we are equated to in the scripture as being the salt of the earth. No other combination of fragrances were to be offered other than this one. In verses to come, Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu offered a strange fragrance which led them being wiped out. Something uniquely standing out about the altar of incense were the horns on which the high priest was to apply the blood of atonement on that one day when the sins of the whole nation would be wiped. Our atoning blood today is the blood of the new covenant…the blood of Christ Who died for our sins. Our prayers are to be seasoned with a fragrance acceptable before God. Christ is the centre of our prayers. He’s the reason for our existence and that’s why we should worship Him. Prayers offered without acknowledgement of the supremacy of the atoning power of Christ’s blood are null and void. This is the reason why we pray in Jesus name. He’s the One on Who’s name our prayers are answered and no other.
