12 Then the Lord said to Moses, 13 “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy. 14 “ ‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. 15 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’ ” 18 When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

The Sabbath…a day set aside for the people of Israel to remember the creation story and the day the Lord rested from His work. But Sabbath went beyond that. It was specifically a day set aside for worship of the Almighty…a day to consecrate and forget about all other things as we focus on God. God stated that this day would be a sign between Him and His people. A sign to who? To the nations around them. They would see them set aside a whole day of the week for worship and wonder why?…a good opportunity to speak about the goodness of God to them. The Sabbath is a day defining our commitment to God. But it’s also a day when all other people around us are stunned and amazed by us setting aside our work, our commitment and busy schedules to worship a God Who has done wondrous things for us. Sabbath is a day when we do what Mary did in the gospels…as her sister, Martha kept herself busy during Christ’s visit. Mary just sat down at the feet of Christ and drew virtue, goodness and blessings. Sabbath day reminds us that in the midst of a busy world, we must stop and worship the One Who’s given us the strength to do the things we do. Our Lord.
