LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

30 Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the Lord has chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— 32 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 33 to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. 34 And he has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers.

Bezalel and Oholiab were filled with God’s Spirit to do His work. God also equipped them with the required wisdom and knowledge. All knowledge, wisdom, skill and talents come from God. We might be tempted to imagine that it’s our ingenuity that enabled us to pass exams…or to qualify for that job…or to be a cut above the rest in vocational skill. Nooo! It’s God Who’s given us all these as gifts. Scripture says that, ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.’
(James 1:17). Every skill, every ability to grasp and apply knowledge comes from God Who gives it freely to us. But for what purpose? Verse 34 reminds us the reason. These two anointed gentlemen were to teach others…they were not to be selfish with their God given skills. They were to be a blessing to others equipping them with the ability to participate in God’s work…a challenge to those of us who are blessed with academic, vocational, artistic and all types of knowledge and skills. These are resources God has entrusted to us on behalf of the people around us…the community. In the world today, knowledge is sold. In God’s economy, it is to be dispensed freely to benefit those of the household of faith so that they may be equipped to serve God.
