71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes.

Affliction draws out value inside of us. This affliction may come in different ways…from troublesome people, failure, sickness etc. The psalmist recalls how he has been faithful in keeping God’s commands yet bad people still continue to make life harder for him. The truth is that being a good person is no guarantee to being comfortable in life. In fact it just might mean the opposite. We shall face affliction, turmoil and failure in many ways. But nothing happens without a reason. The psalmist recalls how these afflictions exist to help him learn the statutes of God. Failure humbles us. It helps us run back to God. We see this in the book of Judges when the Israelites were afflicted by oppressing nations. They turned back to God. It’s a time to seek God to draw strength from Him. When we fail in sin, in our families or in our professional lives, it’s time to turn to God to learn what He’s saying to us at that point in time.
