24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. 27 When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.

Apollos: a learned man with immense knowledge of scripture, a Jew, an eloquent speaker and apologist, a man who was looked upon… Apollos had the credentials anyone would desire. However he lacked one thing…the knowledge about the baptism by the Holy Spirit. Priscilla and Aquila called him aside and shared with him this truth which impacted on him greatly. Apollos, though elevated, was armed with an attitude of humility. He didn’t question the couple but sat down under their teaching to listen to them. Priscilla and Aquila were tent makers…people who relied on the tools of trade for a living. They had in fact hosted Paul for a while. But God still used them to guide and disciple a great man of God, Apollos. Pride gets in the way of instruction. Are there times I feel so elevated in stature that I cannot sit down at the feet of a person I deem lesser than myself? If so, then…PRIDE… CHECK. God brings people in our lives who may speak so softly that we may not notice them. But if we choose to stop what we’re doing to listen, then we’ll receive edification.
