Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
Matthew 5:43-47 KJV
Our human nature always battles with our new found godly nature in Christ. The human nature seeks good treatment, the Godly nature seeks to treat others well; the human nature seeks to pay good for good and bad for bad; the godly nature seeks good for all, the human nature seeks vengeance, the godly nature seeks reconciliation. This is a battle we’ll fight as long as we confess our faith in Christ. This is because, when we’re saved, we still remain part and parcel of this world. We still encounter the same hateful, envious and bad people in our lives who desire our downfall no matter what good we do for them. Our human instincts direct us to seek to get even with them. The godly way however guides us to seek good for them. This scripture gives us an analogy into the mind of God in this respect in verse 45: He makes the rain fall on the good and bad people. He makes the sun to shine on the just and unjust. God does not withhold good in account of someone’s nature. He does good because God is good. He expects us to do the same good to all irrespective of their intentions towards us. If we do good only to those who wish us well, aren’t we the same with the people of the world? But if by the Spirit, we make a choice to do good even to those who wish us ill, we are indeed counted as God’s children.
