And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
Matthew 6:5-6 KJV
Christ begins addressing the issue of prayer. He starts by highlighting the posture of a praying person. How should one pray? How should they conduct themselves while praying? Interestingly, we not only see Christ talking about a secretive posture while praying but we see Him actually practising it. In His daily routines, every time He needed to pray, we saw Him retreat to a secluded place to pray. We even see Him with His three beloved disciples retreating to the garden if Gethsemane to pray away from the multitudes. This posture communicates something to us…prayer is communion with God. We therefore out to be careful about where we do it. Praying by heart can happen anywhere. However, when we deliberately seek to have quality time exclusively with God in prayer, we must be ready to set aside time, set aside space and be away from others in order to seek God. Yes we could seek God truthfully in the midst of a multitude. It happens during corporate prayers. However, if one desires to commune with God at a personal level, it is important to do so in private. God desires us not only to seek Him but for us not to be seen by others as being superior to them spiritually. Our communing with God must be above board. As we connect with Him, we must not be seen to stumble others in the process.
