Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Matthew 5:17 KJV
Christ makes it clear to us. He has come to fulfill the law. The law was made to make us right before God. It was made as a guide to lead us away from wrongdoing though we still faltered and struggled. So God sent to us Jesus Christ to enable us to fulfill the law. Freedom in Christ is not a ticket to break the law. We are still expected to abide by the law. Even as a citizen, I’m expected to abide by the penal code failure to which, I will be arrested, tried, convicted, sentenced and jailed. Christ did not come to render the law irrelevant but to raise the bar. Whereas laws are there to punish offenders, as believers in Him, we ought to live a life that is way above reproach. As we shall see in the following verses, sins such as adultery and hate had a much higher clearance threshold under Christ than under the Mosaic law. Our lives as Christians must be the embodiment of the law itself. We must live a life that is so Christlike and above board (pertaining to the national laws) that we’re an example to others.
