And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Matthew 6:13 KJV
‘Lead us not into temptation’. Quite a statement. Would we anticipate God to lead us into temptation? Can God tempt us? Probably the start of the book of Job gives us some insight into this. Job is described as a righteous man. However, ‘God allowed’ Satan to torment him. Satan saw it as an opportunity to tempt Job to forsake God. However, God used the opportunity to test Job’s faith in Him. Temptation and tests are two sides of the same coin. Sometimes God allows us to pass through the valley of temptations not to our detriment but in order to build up our faith. Temptations however are tough to go through. They can cause us to fall. Challenges and temptations build our faith. But they don’t necessarily need to. We can choose willingly to grow in our love for God. This in no way prevents God from exercising His sovereignty when He desires that we go through tests. He can still do so if He wishes. But even when He does, we must still be found righteous before Him.
We’re reminded also that all power belongs to the Lord. He is an all powerful and Almighty God. This should resonate in our minds when we approach Him.
