Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side. And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Matthew 8:18-20 KJV
We’re told of the scribe who chose to engage Christ when He had dismissed the rest. This must have been a man hungry for the word. He must have been man eager to sit under the teachings of Christ. He must have been a potential disciple. When he expressed his interest in following Christ, Christ did not turn him away. He instead informed him about the cost of following Him. If he expected a smooth life, he would be disappointed. If he expected abundant provisions, he would be downcast. If he expected much gain, his interests would be short lived. All in all Christ informed him about the cost of discipleship. We’re not informed about his decision thereafter. This however is the situation we face as followers of Christ. To follow Him out of faith. To trust in Him. To know that we might not get it all but as long as we’re with Him, we’re sorted.
