And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
Matthew 8:23-25 KJV
This is the story of the storm on the sea. It’s noteworthy to see that the disciples followed Christ into the boat! Do we follow Christ in our lives? … Back to the disciples…They however did not know what awaited them in the sea. It’s also noteworthy to see that in the midst of the tempest, Christ was fast asleep. I’ve grown up on the Kenyan coast so I have an idea of what a turbulent sea looks like. It is scary to say the least. Yet in the middle of that scary moment, the disciples demonstrated a different attitude from Christ. What does this passage communicate to us? Christ’s presence is no ticket for a life without problems. In fact Christ Himself said that ‘in this life, you’ll have many troubles. But take heart because I’m with you.’ Even as the storm raged and the disciples panicked, Christ was always there by their side. He was just a whisper away. He was just a call away. He was just a prayer away. In the same way, when problems overwhelm us in life, we must not panic and be desperate but realize that He’s just a prayer away. We can emulate the actions of His disciples by calling upon Him. When we do so, He’ll for sure answer as we shall see in the next verses.
