These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Matthew 10:5-6 KJV
Christ dispatches His disciples off to minister. He however instructs them not to go to the Gentiles but only to the House of Israel. Does Christ practice discrimination here? Certainly not. Our ministry must begin at home. In this passage, the first reference to Christ commissioning and sending His disciples takes place. He however does not send them to strangers but to those familiar to them. He chooses to start using them to minister to the House that they all belong to… The House of Israel. Does our ministry make sense in our families? Does it make sense to those who’re familiar to us? Our spouses, children, parents, siblings, neighbours, friends, workmates? Does our gospel have an impact within our places of familiarity? Pastor Gordon McDonald wrote in his book, ‘Ordering Your Private World’ that we have a sphere of influence in our lives. More often than not, it’s usually a point of familiarity. We have people we can influence…they are most likely known to us. There are people we can challenge easily…they are also most likely known to us. There are people we can openly share the gospel with without expecting any harsh repurcussions…they are most likely known to us. We can begin from the known towards the unknown. In this case, the gospel will make sense. Much sense. Because these are the people God has in His wisdom allowed us to be born and dwell amongst.
