Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphæus, and Lebbæus, whose surname was Thaddæus;
Matthew 10:3 KJV
The list of Christ’s disciples goes on. Interesting is the different modes of identification they were given… James, son of Alphaeus, Matthew the Publican…etc. There is something that identifies us today in society. Maybe it’s a good or a bad thing. Christ however is not ashamed of calling you from your miry pit. Because He’s the one who qualifies you. People like Mathew, the writer of this book, were hated and despised because of their profession. Even though this was expected from the masses, Christ went on to call him to ministry. He went on to qualify him when in the eyes of many, he was unqualified. Some of His disciples had a story behind their names… James and John were also known as the sons of thunder, symbolizing their nature… Peter and James were fishermen, uncultured and illiterate men who demonstrated zeal in all that they did. We see a broad spectrum of the kind of people Christ called to Himself. Yet we see Him ministering to them, transforming their hearts and engaging them in ministry. This is a message to us. It doesn’t matter where we are or we’ve come from. Christ is willing to transform us and use us in His ministry.
