Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

John in prison

Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
Matthew 11:2‭-‬3 KJV

John the Baptist had been arrested by Herod. He was languishing in prison and suffering for being the forbearer of the news about the Messiah. He had had a rugged life. A wild man subsisting on wild honey and locusts. An unsophisticated man. A man of passion and zeal to serve God. He however had his share of doubts about the Messiah. Perhaps he had expected a man of tremendous power who would exercise His authority against all evil. Perhaps he expected his own cousin, Christ to perform miracles and free him from the shackles of prison. But that’s not the case. Christ went on with His ministry even though the man who baptized Him languished in a Herodian jail. The story of John is a reminder to us…choosing to serve God doesn’t necessarily guarantee His deliverance from all bad situations. As callous as it sounds it’s true. God uses us to fulfill His will. For us to be satisfied by His working we have to be ready to align our will to His. If not, we stand a great chance of being dissapointed. Perhaps our will is that our situations change…however God’s will might be to use those same situations to glorify Himself through us. Perhaps our will might be to find a full time job…Gods will might be for us to process those ideas He’s feeding us with into business. Perhaps our will might be to embrace that corrupt deal…His will is however clear in this case…God CANNOT condone or support sin. God’s will doesn’t always fit our mould. It can surprise us and even disappoint us. But ours is to desire of Him to lead us according to His will. And to help us walk in its direction.
