Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; and ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
Matthew 10:16-18 KJV
The message of the gospel carries the hope of humanity. However, not all will receive it well. In fact Christ warns us that opposition to the gospel is sure. We shall face persecution if indeed we desire to carry, preach and share the gospel in this world. We’re being dispatched by our Saviour to people He describes as ‘wolves’. However He urges us to behave as sheep. What does one expect when a wolf encounters a sheep…a blood bath. The sheep will be devoured. Christ however urges us to be like sheep. Even though offensive darts will be thrown at us, we must behave above reproach. Though we’ll be treated with disdain and hate, we must choose our reactions wisely by not choosing to ‘return the favor’. He urges us to be as wise as serpents. To choose our fights, to check our movements the way a serpent is weary of its opponents. To be harmless as doves. Not to desire harm for others for whatever reason. To be aware that we’ll face false charges and accusations before men. We might not be physically brought to judges, kings and magistrates but we might have to face false accusations in front of the masses from people who’s desire is our downfall. Christ warns us that these are things to come. As He instructs His disciples on the mission journey, He also instructs us while on a mission in our world. To bear in mind that opposition to the gospel is real and we must be ready for it.
