And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
Matthew 11:23-24 KJV
Capernaum was one of the cities Christ performed miracles and ministered to people. He touched many lives there. However, He issues a warning to the city and it’s dwellers. He reminds them that the works performed in the city should have drawn them closer to God. In fact He states that if the same was done in Sodom and Gomorrah, the cities would be standing. Miracles, signs and wonders are performed to draw us closer to God. We witness God’s move and works on a daily basis. He doesn’t work in our lives and surroundings for the sake of it. He does so to call us to Him. We are a modern day Capernaum. God’s move in our lives is evident in many ways. We see God transforming people, God providing for people, God healing people, lives being changed on account of the blood of Christ. Do we remain the same upon witnessing this? Do we just marvel and leave it at that or do we desire an encounter with the Transformer? Do we follow after the miracles or desire the Miracle Maker? Like the multitudes in Capernaum, we could be first class spectators of Christ’s work. However, our spectating doesn’t qualify us for the Kingdom of God. Believing in Christ does.
