And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
Matthew 12:23-24 KJV
Jesus was not only the Son of God but the Son of David. He was the Son of a mortal man, Joseph, a descendant of David. Conceived of the Holy Spirit and lived among men in a locality in His childhood. Christ was familiar to some. He was the boy from the hood. The people who recalled Him from his youth could not reconcile with what He had become. The young obedient man transformed into a man walking in power. Power to heal, power to cast out demons, power to raise from the dead, power over all. Even though they knew this, the naysayers still claimed that He performed His miracles through the power of evil. After trying hard to alienate Him from people, they settled at their trump card…to associate Him with Beelzebub himself. A sobering lesson indeed. We’re not immune to criticism. In fact we must not frown at unfair accusations. We have to expect them. But when they come we must seek Christ’s will and walk in it. It must not take us by surprise.
