And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: and if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

The charges from the Pharisees were a trigger for a rich discourse. A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. In no way could Christ cast out demons through the power of the devil. He only accomplished it through the power of the Holy Spirit. Surely, the Pharisees were making such a charge to probably provoke Him to lash out in sin. But Christ lays down the basics and answers them without disrespecting them. On many occasions we shall meet provocations of various kinds. Ours is not to respond in arrogance and disrespect but to make our points known respectfully. Even as Christ explained the obvious, He could see the rot and filth in their heart. But He saw an opportunity to teach and to speak with authority. He saw an opportunity to minister.
