But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Matthew 12:36-37 KJV
The words we speak are not just words…they can dictate our destiny. How do I use these words? Do my words build or destroy others? Do I use my words sometimes in vain? Do I use my words to attack and vilify others? It’s, an important lesson especially in marriage. The way I use my words will determine how my wife will respond to me. If I use them to encourage her, to build her, she’ll feel blessed and privileged. If I use them to criticize and demean her, she’ll feel defeated and deflated. Our words can build or destroy our children. Our words can build or destroy friendships. Isn’t it interesting that even on social media when we make simple but thoughtless comments, people always react? They do so because even though we placed little thought in what we wrote, others placed serious thought in what they read. Empty words are not empty. They can and unfortunately will lead others to judgement on that Day. May the good Lord help me. May He forgive me for the empty, unprofitable and divisive words I have used. May He lead me to ask Him for direction before opening my mouth to speak, or putting words on pen and paper or on my mobile phone, computer, laptop or tablet.
