And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

In a society that followed the Mosaic law to the letter, a statement such as the one expressed in this passage was a very radical one. For people who believed that certain kinds of meat or meals were unclean, this must have come as a shocker. However, what was the real shocker was that real uncleanliness originates from what our mouths speak! The mouth is a symbol. In our day and age, it might represent the actual physical mouth, what we write on social media, how we talk to our family members, neighbours, workmates etc. How we use our mouths really puts us on a pedestal or in the pit. Our mouths and what they speak are key indicators of what exists deep within our hearts. In another passage, Christ states that for ‘out of the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks’. The filth within us sooner or later crystallises into words released from our mouths. So the purity of polluted nature of our hearts is displayed through what we speak or write. This is a clear message to us. Before we speak, we must tread carefully, examine our motives and attitudes, seek God then respond. The mouth takes in food that nourishes us. But the mouth releases what is hidden in our hearts through words. Once words are released they can’t be retreaved.
