The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

Christ in His characteristic nature responds to a question using parables. One wonders how someone would understand an answer using a complex parable like ‘the sign of Jonah’. However, Christ was responding to the Pharisees to open their eyes and notice the obvious. The signs of heaven they were seeking were as clear as the signs of the sky. Christ uses the story of Jonah to highlight His death for three days before resurrection in the same way Jonah was in the fish’s belly for three days before being released. Christ points the multitude to Himself without them knowing it. He is the personification of the Kingdom of heaven. He is the personification of God Himself. He is the symbol of our faith. It stands and is established only in Him alone. The reason for our faith is in God through Christ and Christ alone.
