Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
Matthew 16:22-23 KJV
Sometimes when we bask in the comfort of the moment we forget that we should not be prisoners of the status quo but rather immigrants on the way to attaining a greater goal. Peter, the one who had received heaped praise from Christ now turned villain for refusing to accept the reason Christ came to earth. Even though he had all along known the trajectory of Christ’s life on earth, he was in denial. He chose not to see Christ’s greater goal but the temporary joy of dwelling with Him. Our lives as believers resemble the life of Christ when He was on earth. However, sometimes our attitudes default to the one held by Peter. At times we forget that in this world, we’re nothing other than pilgrims. Our primary focus is to prepare ourselves for that day when we’ll be united with Christ in His second coming. At times, we must call ourselves or allow ourselves to be called to order. To realize that we’re on a race and the finish line is beckoning. It doesn’t matter how comfortable the company of the fans is, we must continue to run this race of faith till we cross the finish line. Christ’s finish line on earth was His death and resurrection. No amount of lack of focus by Peter would detour Him. He was in this earthly race to the end. He lived His earthly life with the end in sight…defeat of sin on the cross at Golgotha. Our end is uniting with Christ. We must live our lives with this end in mind.
