And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
Matthew 17:3-5 KJV
The appearance of Moses and Elijah might have signified that Christ’s life represented both the law of Moses and the prophets. There probably might have been doubts in the hearts of the disciples. Probably, they might have asked themselves about the authenticity of Christ as the Messiah…probably, they might have had their doubts on the way He differed with the teachers of the law. Here God removes all doubt from their minds by allowing the appearance of Elijah, Moses and by stating with His voice that ‘this is my Son, whom I am well pleased. Hear ye Him.’ These words resemble the words uttered by God on Christ when being baptized by John. It was a confirmation of the Christ to the multitude. Here, it was a confirmation of the Christ to the disciples.
