From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
Matthew 16:21 KJV
Christ’s star was on the rise. His ministry was growing fast. He was making waves and attracting attention from many quarters. He could have been tempted to stay on this mountain of fame and glory but instead, He remembered the greater mission ahead of Him. He knew that He had a higher apex to attain. He knew the primary reason He had been sent to earth…to die on the cross and resurrect on the third day for the redemption of man. He remembered that the ultimate expression of His love for mankind would be crystallised on that day when He would be crucified. It was important that He called His disciples to order to remind them of the approaching day. For them to know that His presence on this earth was temporary. That a great climax was fast approaching..the day when the sin of man would be imputed in Him. And He would be made to carry judgement on our behalf. It’s a reminder to us that we’re not on this earth permanently. We have a mission to accomplish. That when the right time comes, our time will be exhausted and we’ll be called to the Great Judge. It’s a reminder that we are just passers by. Our goal has to be to do the will of God on earth. This will is crystallised through our belief in Christ. We must be prepared to be here temporarily after which we’ll be called home. We must keep our focus on the end and live our lives with the end in mind.
