As Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him in private. “Tell us when all this will be,” they asked, “and what will happen to show that it is the time for your coming and the end of the age.” Jesus answered, “Be on your guard, and do not let anyone deceive you. Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, ‘I am the Messiah!’ and they will deceive many people.
Matthew 24:3-5 GNBDC
Christ tells His disciples about great deception in the end times. He says that many people who claim to speak for Him will deceive many people. They will proclaim that they are the Christ. He therefore told His disciples to BE ON GUARD! Something striking pops out of this message…Christ spoke of MANY MEN deceiving MANY PEOPLE that they are the Christ. But how would mere mortal men born of women purport to be Christ and deceive many in an age of enlightenment? Mainly, through false doctrine. Christ starts the message by telling His disciples to BE ON GUARD. This is a call to be in fellowship with God. To be constantly in prayer and fasting, constantly in fellowship with other believers, constantly soaked in His word, constantly in His service, constantly evangelising, constantly giving, constantly exercising faith in Him among other spiritual disciplines. It is only when we are immersed in our spiritual walk with Him that we’ll be able to identify any deception. Many false teachers and prophets claim to believe in Christ. They use His word at the pulpit, they even perform miracles, signs and wonders but they do not have the fruit of the spirit. They command a following majority of which believe more in them than in the Messiah. They deceive their flock by corrupting noble spiritual practices like giving, prayer and fellowship while neglecting arming them with knowledge of spiritual pillars such as righteousness, honesty, truth, love, true peace, integrity, hard work, commitment to marriage and family thereby leading them astray. Christ is calling on us to be on GUARD and be counted. To practise biblical disciplines and avoid falling into the same trap of deception.
