“How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You clean the outside of your cup and plate, while the inside is full of what you have obtained by violence and selfishness. Blind Pharisee! Clean what is inside the cup first, and then the outside will be clean too! “How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look fine on the outside but are full of bones and decaying corpses on the inside. In the same way, on the outside you appear good to everybody, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and sins.
Matthew 23:25-28 GNBDC
Every Sunday morning, we appear in church wearing our Sunday best, looking the best way we can. Yet many of us are battling with issues deep within. Some of us have financial issues while others relationship issues. Some have health issues while others with family issues. Some of us struggle with forgiveness while others struggling with sin. Behind the beautiful facade we present lies hearts which are hurt, empty and in need of a touch. Christ reminds us that what makes us is not our outward appearance but what is within. Drawing near to God is not about putting up a cheerful face without while neglecting the rot within. It’s about first accepting that we have a problem within. That we have struggles, we have sin, we have hatred, we have selfishness, we harbor envy and jealousy within. It’s also about being vulnerable to God for Him to deal with our internal struggles and mould us into His likeness.
