Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. Grief and anguish came over him, and he said to them, “The sorrow in my heart is so great that it almost crushes me. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
Matthew 26:36-38 GNBDC
The Gethsemane experience teaches us two main things:
- Agreeing in prayer with others.
Christ did not embark onto prayer alone. He took with Him James, John and Peter. These three formed the inner circle of His ministry company. He confided in them and we can also remember them at the mountain of transfiguration. Even on the way to the cross, Christ did not hide the details from His disciples. He involved them and fellowship with them along the way. He shared with them and also sought their company. He ensured that they learnt from Him even as He waited on God. - In the midst of anguish, we must tarry in God’s presence.
What awaited Christ was a period of great suffering. He was earmarked to pay the ultimate price for the sins of humanity. His heart was heavy. He was grieved. Yet in the midst of this grief, He poured Himself into the presence of God. When grief comes, it weighs us down. It discourages and pushes us deeper into depression. However, we learn from Christ that when gripped with grief, the only outlet is through petitioning God. God is our solid Rock and Fortress. Our present help in time of need. When we run to Him, we get rescued. We find assurance. We obtain cover from grief and sorrow. We find comfort and grace as was bestowed onto Christ during these hard times.
