Once more Jesus went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup of suffering cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” He returned once more and found the disciples asleep; they could not keep their eyes open.
Matthew 26:42-43 GNBDC
The place of prayer is a place of ministry. It’s a place of comfort. It’s a place of assurance. It’s a place where we find refuge in God. It’s a place where we find direction in Him. In the first plea to God, Christ requested that if possible, the cup of suffering could be taken away from Him though not His will but God’s will be done. This second plea was similar. However a striking difference was that Christ was getting to a place of submission. He realized that God had locked His focus squarely on Him and He was to carry the burden of sin for man. He was getting to a point of full acceptance…your will be done. Not that He hadn’t fully accepted His place, but only that He was teaching us submission to God in practice. It would have even been better if the disciples had not succumbed to sleep but were there to witness it first hand. Christ submitted Himself. We also ought to submit ourselves to the perfect will of God. The place of acceptance of God’s perfect will is a place of peace and comfort not because things will work to your favour but because you are assured that God is by your side every step of the way. During the great Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, Moses pleaded with God to go with them. He stated that if He didn’t, then they wouldn’t move an inch. God manifested Himself in the form of a pillar of fire during the night and a cloud during the day. The path to the promised land wasn’t easy. However, the children of Israel knew that God was with them. As Christ came to the full acceptance of His fate on the cross, God would give Him grace and strength to persevere to the end.
