After the Sabbath, as Sunday morning was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. Suddenly there was a violent earthquake; an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled the stone away, and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid that they trembled and became like dead men.
Matthew 28:1-4 GNBDC
The resurrection of Christ needed not to be eventful. He had spoken about it on numerous occasions. By now, it was clear…He would rise again from the dead and defeat sin once and for all. However, at the request of the chief priests, Pilate had placed guards at the entrance of the tomb where Christ had been buried. The guards had also rolled a large stone to close the entrance. The stone was so huge, it needed many men to remove. Besides, they would not be able to do so without causing commotion which the guards would notice. In the eyes of someone who did not believe in Christ, the situation looked sealed…water tight. No room had been left for mischief. The ‘falsehood’ about the resurrection would be unearthed and the message of Christ will ultimately lose all credibility. However, our God cannot turn back on His word. He says that His word cannot go and come back void but must accomplish the purpose He sent it for. He sent Christ to redeem man from sin through death and resurrection. This message had been spoken of on numerous occasions in His word. This was the time He was going to show Himself strong and prove beyond any reasonable doubt that all things could pass away but His word must come to pass. And what better cloud of witnesses to behold this great fulfillment of scripture than the guards themselves and the women who trailed Jesus; those who believed and those who didn’t! They were there to witness the angel move the rock in a tumult and expose the empty tomb in fulfillment of God’s word. When God moves, He moves so evidently for all to see. This is the God we serve.
