But Pilate asked the crowd, “Which one of these two do you want me to set free for you?” “Barabbas!” they answered. “What, then, shall I do with Jesus called the Messiah?” Pilate asked them. “Crucify him!” they all answered.
Matthew 27:21-22 GNBDC
Pilate literally delegated his judicial authority to the mob. The choice was between the release of Barrabas and Christ. Pilate fronted the question to the crowd and they chose Barrabas. He then asked them what should happen to Christ after which they demanded for His crucifixion. Two points to ponder:
- The crowd faced a choice between Christ and Barrabas…Good and bad.
These are the kind of decisions we face on a daily basis. In everything we do, we face a choice between Christ and the world. What will we choose? Will we choose Christ? Or will we choose the world? The rejection of Christ by man was rubber-stamped in this tumultuous event. God presented His Son to us as a propriation for our sins. We however chose sin over Him. - Our rejection of Him sent Him to the cross to pay for our sins.
Love is best depicted by Christ Himself. He took the rejection we showed to Him and turned it into great redemption mission for the same people who rejected Him. He took the bad hurled at Him and used it to produce good for all and sundry. This is the message He has for us. To be people desiring to do good to all. To serve all. To pick the bad situations around us and through Him turn them for the good of others. He paid the ultimate price for our sins. However, He came to that point after facing rejection from the same people He chose to redeem. What greater love than this!!!
