LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

HE WASHED HIS HANDS…

But Pilate asked, “What crime has he committed?” Then they started shouting at the top of their voices: “Crucify him!” When Pilate saw that it was no use to go on, but that a riot might break out, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am not responsible for the death of this man! This is your doing!” The whole crowd answered, “Let the responsibility for his death fall on us and our children!” Then Pilate set Barabbas free for them; and after he had Jesus whipped, he handed him over to be crucified.
Matthew 27:23‭-‬26 GNBDC

Pilate was a man under siege. But he was also a man who desired to make the right decision. In this passage, he chose to reason with the crowd. I’m sure he must have searched the life of Christ and found no wrongdoing. He struggled within himself especially after the wife warned him about Christ. Now, he gathered courage and asked the crowd to mention the crime Christ committed to warrant death on the cross. This was a bold move. The Israelites had been given autonomy by the Romans for this very reason…to be in charge of their affairs. Pilate as the administrator was responsible to see that the way they conducted their affairs was in accordance with the Roman laws. In this case however, things didn’t make sense! The charged ‘criminal’ had committed no crime. He was being charged for claiming to be the Messiah and the King of the Jews. However, when Pilate saw that the crowd was becoming more unruly, he chose to let them have their way. However, he had a point to make at the end…he washed his hands symbolising that he had no responsibility over His death. In fact, as he did that, the crowd demanded that if there was to be any blame let it be on them and on their children. Such was the drive to eliminate Christ. A drive that saw people pronounce a curse over themselves and their children. Even when they had seen the warning signs, they still went right ahead with their plans. Choices have consequences. The consequences of them desiring harm on an innocent man would carry on from them to many generations to come. The decisions we make will impact our children. We must choose to make wise decisions. Only then, will our children enjoy a fruitful and enjoyable heritage.
