LIFE SCRIPTS

Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

DOUBT AND FAITH

The eleven disciples went to the hill in Galilee where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshipped him, even though some of them doubted.
Matthew 28:16‭-‬17 GNBDC

This was the disciples’ first meeting with Christ after crucifixion. They all proceeded to the place they had been instructed to go. There, they encountered Christ. Scripture says that once they noticed Him, they worshipped Him (vs 17). However, there were some among them who doubted (vs 18). Faith can be expressed both corporately and individually. In the midst of others, our lack of faith can be uplifted by the faith of others. When we are weak in faith, we can bank on the faith of others. However, personal or individual faith has a very central place in our walk with Christ. For our relationship with him to be true, we must exercise personal faith in Him. It is possible to exercise a lack of faith in the midst of people who are demonstrating faith. Such was the case here. Some of Christ’s disciples lacked faith. They found it hard to believe that it was truly Him. These were not just followers of Christ but His disciples! Though they had walked with Him, heard Him speak and even heard Him confess about His death and resurrection, they still found it hard to believe in Him. These are the instances when doubt is stubborn. Christ however calls us to have a stubborn faith. A faith that believes even the unbelievable because God is in the picture. A faith that sees beyond the obvious. A faith that transcends the normal. A faith that is beyond the physical. A faith that contradicts science. A faith in an all powerful and all knowing God. Faith in God! The good thing about the disciples was that even though some disbelieved, all they needed was to see. They could see, feel, touch and encounter the risen Christ. He was tangible…He was in their midst. Sometimes, our stubbornness leads us to doubt yet exercising faith is easier because our object of faith is evident. When sick, sometimes we doubt whether we’ll recover yet He’s stated that He’s Jehovah Rappha; when in debt, we sometimes doubt whether we’ll be debt free yet He’s stated that He’s Jehovah Jireh; when our marriages are on the rocks, we worry whether they will hold yet He’s stated that what He has put together, no man shall pull asunder. Christ has a clear message for us…He is there in our midst. His triumph over sin is evident for us to see. Our changed lives, our assurance of salvation and the peace we have on account of Him. We only need to believe in Him and He’ll meet all our needs according to His riches in glory and perfect will.
