He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth— Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord.
Psalms 40:2-3 NKJV
Out of a horrible pit… Out of miry clay. I’ve tried walking on heavy clay soils after rain, and it’s not an interesting situation. Your feet keep on sliding against the slimy mud…you put in more energy but with little progress…your shoes gather mud all around them and within no time it looks as if you are carrying a ‘mat’ under your shoes. Now, picture such a situation while in a pit? The psalmist recalls how God brings him out of such a situation. He pays tribute to His lovingkindness and mercies. He says that the Lord not only lifts him up from his struggles but establishes his feet upon the rock…yes our feet are steady and fixed on the Rock. Our Rock is Christ. We stand in Him and are not shaken. This scripture speaks to us who are trapped in a rut…confined in a hole with life situations. Every day, we wake up discovering that we’re in a fix, and we can’t help but keep on digging deeper and deeper. This hole might be depression, sickness, debt, family issues, business failure, professional struggles, or even sin. Well, the psalmist encourages us to first stop digging ourselves deeper into the hole. He reminds us to now look up…to call upon the One who can lift us up from this mess. These are the times when we realize that we’re weak and can’t do it on our own. We need a band of brothers or sisters God has placed around us to lift us up and carry us along. There’s nothing as humiliating as conceding defeat…but it nurtures humility and allows us to get help. Praise be to God.
