Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
Romans 5:1-5 NIV
The peace we enjoy in our lives is because of being justified by faith in Christ. The cross of Christ gives us the tranquility that our hearts long for. It gives us an assurance within us that we are at peace with God. This is one of those verses which cements the assurance we have of our salvation in Christ. In times of doubt and confusion, we can turn to this portion of scripture and be confident that it is faith and faith alone in Christ that justifies us before God. Many false teachers make a subtle and tactful departure point here to mislead many. Inasmuch as they claim to confess Christ and call on others to confess Him, they seem to emphasize on other rituals and steps in order to make our salvation ‘sure’. Faith and belief in Christ is enough to justify us before God. Our faith in Christ gives us a hope that we’ll see God ultimately. This hope that our faith instills is one that strengthens us in times of suffering and turmoil. It is the end game for the challenges that we face on a daily basis in our lives. It helps us to look forward, to focus and to remain steadfast. There’s something unique hope instills in our psyche. Even when things are going the wrong way, we have a belief that ultimately we shall have eternal rest. So in this world, as long as we have our faith secured in Christ, we are assured of eternal rest. Our minds and hearts are geared towards eternity even though we face temporary challenges today.
