Our life's patterns transformed by God's grand story

PATIENCE 1

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
Ephesians 4:1‭-‬3 NIV

‘A life worthy of the calling you’ve received’. This is somewhat a loaded statement from Apostle Paul. It means that there is a type of life we must strive towards which is fit for the faith we claim to have. What are the attributes of such a kind of life? Verse 2 gives us an insight into this: humility, gentleness and patience. It’s amazing how these traits are still components of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. But what does patience really entail? What does it mean for a believer? Verse 2 continues to give us a clue: bearing with one another in love. Love is the common denominator where patience is involved. Have you ever felt tired of waiting for someone? I recall waiting impatiently for a customer to complete his transaction in an ATM machine. He took over 5 minutes counting the cash he had withdrawn. This seemed so insensitive to me…didn’t he know that there were others waiting? Couldn’t he count the cash elsewhere? These are the same questions we face when we demonstrate impatience around us. In the haste of finishing what we want to do we drive others out of impatience and not out of love. Love is never impatient (1 Corinthians 13:4). Patience considers others even when it doesn’t look obvious. The word of God reminds us to bear with each other gently. God honors patience in our impatient world.
