Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

Peter reveals to us a war that rages within our new being. It’s a war that is fought literally for the soul of the transformed man. Our encounter with Christ transforms our souls from being flesh led to becoming spirit led. The day we receive Christ in our lives, there is an immediate change of management. Christ now calls the shots. However, even though there is a change of management, our flesh does not choose to submit to the new Man in charge. It must be made to by our will. We must desire to follow the leading of the One in charge. As we do so, our fleshly desires lose their hold on us. However, if we let our will be led by the fleshly desires even if it’s for a moment, our sinful acts will wage war upon our converted soul. The soul is the centre of the struggle between the spirit and the flesh. What determines the outcome is our will. If we choose to follow our flesh, our souls are won over by the flesh. If we choose to follow the spirit, they are won over by the spirit. Peter goes on further to motivate us on why we should empower the spirit to take control over our souls. He states that it’s because we are ‘foreigners and exiles’. Our lives on this earth are just but a passing shadow. The gratification of the flesh will last only for a moment. However, if we let our lives to be guided by the Spirit of God, then we’ll live a satisfying life both here on earth and after death.
