20 “Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning. 21 In the tent of meeting, outside the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law, Aaron and his sons are to keep the lamps burning before the Lord from evening till morning. This is to be a lasting ordinance among the Israelites for the generations to come.

Olive oil was to be used as fuel for the lighting up of the lamps in the presence of the Lord. This was the responsibility of Aaron and his sons, a special type of Levites called the priests. The lamps were to burn overnight till morning. In the scripture, oil is a symbol of the Spirit of God. God anointed kings and set them apart through the use of oil by His prophets. Samuel used oil in the cases of both Saul and David. In fact in the case of Saul, once anointed, scripture says that the Spirit of God filled him. God’s presence in our lives is because of the indwelling of His Spirit in us. The Spirit of God points us to the chosen One, Jesus Christ. We live our lives governed by Him. The Spirit illuminates our lives allowing us to walk righteously…to walk in the light. Even in the thickest of darkness, God’s Spirit illuminates our paths for us. This oil was to be refilled everyday by the children of Aaron. In the same way, we’re supposed to seek the infilling of the Holy Spirit everyday. We must desire to be led by His overflowing presence in our lives. The light from the lamps shone at night, the darkest time of the day the way God’s presence shines through our lives during the darkest moments.
